BASSEKOU KOUYATE

Title: Ngoni Fola

I've been planning out a trip to Mali and Senegal for a few months and I'm getting ready to leave soon. I failed in persuading Amato to come along-- although I have a feeling if it was Maui instead of Mali, it might have worked. Meanwhile these two west African countries have incredibly rich musical traditions that have had immense impact on popular American music. I've been lucky to have introductions to musicians in both countries. I didn't know much about Bassekou Kouyate-- aside from the fact that he's a cool ngoni player, did some work with Dee Dee Bridgewater and Taj Mahal and that he is at the Royal Albert Hall in London tonight and has a killer My Space page and a wonderful EPK. I'll write back from Bamako after I see him play live in a few weeks. For now, I hope you enjoy his music as much as I do.

ART CAMEROON ANGU WALTERS

Cameroon

Early inhabitants of present-day Cameroon included the Sao civilisation around Lake Chad and the Baka hunter-gatherers in the southeastern rainforest. Portuguese explorers reached the coast in the 15th century and named the area Rio dos Camarões ("River of Prawns"), the name from which Cameroon derives.

Fulani soldiers founded the Adamawa Emirate in the north in the 19th century, and various ethnic groups of the west and northwest established powerful chiefdoms and fondoms.

Cameroon History

Cameroon became a German colony in 1884. After World War I, the territory was divided between France and Britain as League of Nations mandates. The Union des Populations du Cameroun political party advocated independence but was outlawed in the 1950s. It waged war on French and Cameroonian forces until 1971.

In 1960, French Cameroun became independent as the Republic of Cameroun under President Ahmadou Ahidjo. The southern part of British Cameroons merged with it in 1961 to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon. The country was renamed the United Republic of Cameroon in 1972 and the Republic of Cameroon in 1984.

Here are some photos of the artist, his extended family, and his gallery.

Angu Walters was born in 1980, native of Nsongwa in the Mezam Division of the North West Province of Cameroon.

Apart from being a fine artist he also sings with the "Melting Age Band, MAB" in the company of the late Spee. He likes traditional African music.

His interest in painting started when he was a boy experimenting with ink from different pen colors, mixed and applied them on torn cardboards, which were sometimes hung on the walls of his mother's sitting room. His mother invited Spee, a very famous artist to show him what the child was doing with the materials he could find in his milieu, thereafter the artist took him to his workshop, under his guidance so to better improve on his skills.

Since then, he has had a professional revolution with much inspiration drawn from his fine arts mentor.

He dwells mostly on abstract and surreal paintings which focus mostly on the painful side of life like poverty and disease. He also paints music which he claims reflects the happy side of life.

His works express surrealism because he believes that his dreams are inspirational to his life and works.

He titles his favorite painting "The Happy Family" because to him, the family is the foundation on which a successful professional and matrimonial life is built.

His works are exhibited in galleries world-wide and in the National Museum in Yaoundé. He has trained five fine artists whom he says are excelling in the profession. Although artist are not very appreciated in Cameroonian society. One of his dreams is to set up an art center/school in Bamenda in support of Cameroonian painters trying to make a career out of tiger art.

MAGNA
Concert Productions International (familiarly, CPI). Major promoter of rock concerts and tours in North America. It was established in Toronto in 1973 as a subsidiary of WBC Productions Ltd by Michael Cohl, William (Bill) Ballard, and Mediagenics Entertainment. CPI-Mediagenics extended its sphere of influence across Canada. CPI=Mediagenics organized many national tours by major rock and pop acts and produced more than 250 concerts and events each year in addition to sporting and theatrical events. With its focus on concert tours, CPI promoted successful tours for the Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Pink Floyd. In 1989 it began to acquire international touring rights for groups such as the Rolling Stones, whose 115-concert Steel Wheels tour 1989-90 in Canada, the USA, Europe, and Japan generated gross revenues reaching an unprecedented $300 million. It also presented artists in several smaller Toronto venues and promoted concerts in other Ontario cities. In 1990 Canadian concerts accounted for about half of some 1000 CPI presentations worldwide.
